I remember MAM bottles were first mentioned to us whilst Jacob was on the Neonatal unit in the hospital. A nurse had told us he was struggling with certain teats and as Jacob was very fractious when it came to feeds, it made sense to invest in a bottle that was easy for him to get the milk from. So, we decided to buy the MAM Easy Start Self Sterilising Anti Colic Starter Set from Amazon which consisted of 4 x 160ml bottles, 4 x size 1 teats, 4 x 260ml bottles, and 1 x dummy.
These bottles have a vented base which prevents the build-up of air bubbles making them anti-colic. Jacob always had a lot of wind and tummy problems but this was due to his birth and having antibiotics at such a young age. Despite all these issues he had, I always felt satisfied that the bottles were preventing him from feeling any worse. The Doctor Brown bottles are also anti-colic and we nearly chose these but heard that they had a tendency to leak.
By far the best feature with these bottles is that they are self sterilising so you don’t have to use a sterilising machine. The bottles are designed so that you can build them up, add 20ml of water to them and then pop them in the microwave which makes them great for if you are going to someone's house and in my view makes them really good value for money. The only problem we found was that the taller bottles did not fit in our small microwave.
After Jacob had been on the size 1 teats for a while, we realised it was probably time to move him onto a faster-flowing teat. The size 2 teats are for 2 months + and the size 3 teats are for 4 months +. We were always trying to find ways to reduce Jacob’s wind and tummy problems but sometimes when we tried him on faster-flowing teats, he would just choke on the milk, so often we would try him on them again at a later date. He would always struggle at first to get used to the milk flowing faster but after a couple of days got the hang of it.
Even with all of Jacob's tummy troubles, I still feel we made the right decision with these bottles. the self-sterilising feature is fantastic and I'm surprised more brands haven't done the same.
